Bryce Young’s time to shine

Fans have read all the positive reports and glowing comments about Young. After working with the first-team offense at OTAs, head coach Frank Reich raved about the Carolina Panther quarterback’s “complete command” of the offense. Meanwhile, edge rusher Brian Burns praised Young’s swagger and the rookie is also receiving strong marks for his accuracy and football IQ.

All of this aligns with the quarterback we saw at Alabama. It’s why Nick Sabam offered glowing praise, Young recorded a historic S2 Cognitive test cost and his mind has been compared to top NFL offensive coordinators.

Now, all of that might not necessarily result in a lot of highlights at training camp. However, fans will feel a bit like they’re watching Drew Brees, with Carolina’s signal-caller showing total command of the offense, making the right decisions and serving as a leader in his rookie season. We’re not even thinking about a quarterback competition with Andy Dalton, there isn’t one.

Young Panthers receivers have the opportunity to step up

Adam Thielen is the highest-paid wide receiver on the Panthers’ offense this season, but he likely won’t be the one that defines this passing attack. After all, entering his age-33 season, Thielen is coming off a 2022 campaign where he ranked 85th in yards per target (6.7) and 88th in yards per route run (1.15).

Fans should be focused on Jonathan Mingo, Terrace Marshall Jr, DJ Chark and Laviska Shenault. Standing at 6-foot-1, Mingo lit up the NFL Combine with a 9.87 Relative Athletic Score and he’s everything Carolina wanted in its Z receiver. Meanwhile, Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer came away from the spring believing Marshall is on the verge of a breakout season. Chark (15.4 aDOT last season) is an excellent vertical threat and Laviska Shenault can be dangerous underneath. The Panthers don’t have a No. 1 receiver, but there’s a lot of young talent to watch.

Carolina’s coaching staff gets to work

You don’t build arguably the best coaching staff in the NFL without spending and owner David Tepper was willing to do that this offseason. Hiring Reich, a quarterback whisperer, was an excellent move but this is about more than just one coach.

Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero is a future NFL head coach who orchestrated a phenomenal unit with the Denver Broncos. Quarterbacks coach Josh McCown will bring a decade-plus of valuable experience to mentor Young. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will be a head-coaching candidate in 2024 and running backs coach Duce Staley and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson are two of the best at their profession. Coaching is everything in training camp and the Panthers have an All-Star staff.

Important summer for the offensive line

The Panthers’ offensive line used to be its Achilles heel on offense, now it could become a strength. Carolina finished last season ranked fifth in PFF’s Pass Blocking Efficiency (88.2), with left tackle Ikem Ekwonu’s second-half improvement playing a massive role in that. Heading into training camp, we’ll get an early answer about whether or not Ekwonu and Brady Christensen have taken another step forward. If they do, Carolina is set up front and that will be huge for Young.
