Dillon Brooks contract details reveal Houston Rockets star can make far more than realized

When former Memphis Grizzlies wing Dillon Brooks signed with the Houston Rockets this summer, it was originally reported as a four-year deal worth $80 million. Now that the sign-and-trade is official, new contract details show it’s worth significantly more than first reported.

Brooks agreed to the four-year contract with Houston on July 1, with the Rockets and Grizzlies then agreeing to a sign-and-trade. In a three-team deal involving the Atlanta Hawks, Houston received Brooks in a sign-and-trade along with two future second-round picks while Memphis acquired Josh Christopher and a trade exception.

The deal was uniquely structured to help all three teams financially. Memphis gained a trade exception that it can use within the next year. Under the trade exception, the Grizzlies can acquire a player with a contract just above $10 million without sending a salary back to match.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Brooks’ contract with Houston is now official and worth $86 million over four seasons. He can also earn an additional $4 million in incentives, bringing the total value to $90 million over four years. Details on the specific incentives weren’t provided.

  • 2024-’25 salary: $20.54 million
  • 2025-’26 salary: $19.459 million
  • 2026-’27 salary: $18.378 million

Brooks’ salary makes him one of the highest-paid role players in the NBA. Houston structured his contract to have a descending salary each season, maximizing their long-term cap space and helping them reach the salary floor in 2023. Contract estimates provided by Spotrac.com.

The 27-year-old forward is expected to be a starter for Houston to open the season and will provide veteran experience and defense. While Brooks will open the season as the starting small forward, Amen Thompson is expected to take over the role later this year.
