NBA executives believe a Zion Williamson trade still possible in 2023

New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson was floated in NBA trade rumors leading up to the 2023 NBA Draft. When the Pelicans didn’t move him for a top-three pick, many assumed the All-Star forward would stay in New Orleans. However, that might not be a foregone conclusion.

The Pelicans engaged in trade talks with the Charlotte Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers in the weeks leading up to the NBA Draft, expressing interest in the top-three selections. Ultimately, Charlotte drafted Brandon Miller and Portland chose guard Scoot Henderson.

It took Williamson’s name out of the spotlight, replaced by Blazers’ guard Damian Lillard and Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden following their trade demands. However, it appears many around the league believe Williamson could still be traded.

TNT’s NBA insider Chris Haynes reported during a Summer League broadcast on Friday night that in the past four months, many of the league executives he’s talked to believe Williamson could be traded. While there’s agreement he’s not being shopped, the consensus feeling is that Williamson “can be had” and New Orleans is willing to move him for the right price.

The Pelicans have become increasingly frustrated with Williamson over the past year. In addition to his recurring injuries, routinely keeping him away from the court, Williamson’s off-court headlines have created a distraction for the organization. New Orleans also recently dismissed one of his close friends who worked on the staff.

  • Zion Williamson contract: $34.005 million salary (2023-’24), $36.725 million salary (2024-’24), $39.446 million salary (2025-’26), $42.166 million salary (2026-’27)

It remains very possible that the Pelicans are letting the idea of Williamson being traded float out there, without shutting it down, to send a message to the 23-year-old forward. However, with the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks collecting assets to acquire a young superstar in the future, it’s possible NBA teams are signaling where things are headed with Williamson in New Orleans.
