Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud already generating rave reviews

The Houston Texans used the second overall pick on C.J. Stroud, identifying him as the caliber of quarterback who can be the face of their franchise. While there are plenty of hurdles ahead, Stroud is already making a strong first impression.

Houston isn’t immediately making Stroud its starting quarterback. The 21-year-old quarterback is competing with Davis Mills and both signal-callers are splitting reps throughout organized team activities. As one rookie quarterback struggles, another is thriving.

Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters this week that Stroud’s performance this week at OTAs was “very eye-opening” and he was very complimentary of the rookie quarterback. Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle also noted that Stroud stood out and looked “noticeably more comfortable” as he gained more experience and settled in.

Houston has already shown signs of its confidence in Stroud. After taking him with its top pick, the organization drafted wide receiver Nathaniel Dekk with the 69th overall selection because of Stroud’s request.

Stroud was one of the most pro-ready quarterbacks in the 2023 NFL Draft and he further elevated his stock with a historic performance against the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff Semifinal.

While the 6-foot-3 quarterback didn’t run a lot in college, Ohio State Buckeyes coach Ryan Day acknowledged that was because of the scheme. While Stroud doesn’t have Justin Fields’ athleticism, he moves very well for his size and could have a Dak Prescott ceiling.

Stroud is expected to be the Texans’ starting quarterback in Week 1, operating behind one of the best offensive lines in the AFC. However, Houston is still looking to improve the supporting cast around the rookie. With DeAndre Hopkins weighing offers and money influencing his decision, it’s possible the All-Pro receiver rejoins the Texans.
